The wreck of the Cape Jaffa, a fishing trawler which was lost at sea in 1973 when sailing from the fishing community of Kingston, South East – South Australia to Adelaide. 3 lives were lost to the tragedy. The remains of the wreck sits in approximately 35m of water in the Gulf St. Vincent.
Whilst the vessel had been known for some time amongst a small number of divers – No one followed up to share this knowledge with the community and families whom were impacted by the loss of this vessel.
In September 2011, nearly 38 years to the day of its loss, I was able to track down a previous owner of the vessel whom categorically confirmed it being the wreck of the Cape Jaffa ex: Tamara.
With some effort, and the assistance of many community members, families who lost loved ones were followed up and notified of the approximate location of the wreck.
Prior to this they still were to a loss as to the area that the vessel was lost. It had simply disappeared, in a rough storm some 38 years earlier.
I want to thank the many people, who assisted with putting me into contact with family and friends of the crew of the Cape Jaffa.
With kindness, appreciation, and respect – I thank the many who have shared their stories and memories of the Cape Jaffa.
