What are the ideal conditions to surf? Maybe a sunny beach, a windy weather, windy enough to allow the formation of quite decent waves if not giant ones. Probably it would be great to surf in the ocean, wide and open. Also a common sea could work if there aren’t neither artificial nor natural obstacle such as piers or rocks. And last but not least, the place should be not so crowded in order to avoid collisions with other surfers. But how about surfing in places usually not considered as good as the ones we already mentioned because of the presence of rocks? For sure it makes the surfing experience more challenging, more adventurous but also more dangerous. This is exactly what two surfers: Jamie O’Brien and Scott Chelland try to do in this video, surfing at Sharks Cove, Hawaii. Before to see what happens to these guys, let’s get to know better Jamie O’ Brien who is not a new name in the surf world.

James Duncan O’ Brien, 35 years old, is a professional surfer from North Shore, Hawaii. He grew up near the Banzai Pipeline, a surf reef break located off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea. If you’re asking yourself what is a reef break, it’s an area in the ocean where waves start to break after they’ve reached the shallows of a reef. Jamie was one of the youngest surfers ever to win a Pipeline Masters, a surfing competition held annually exactly at Banzai Pipeline.
Jamie explained that his passion for surfing came from talking to the surfers who went to the beach where Jamie’s dad worked as lifeguard. Among his various accomplishments is to mention the first place at Pipeline Masters in 2004 when he was just 21. Along with competing in surfing events Jamie produced also two surfing films: Freakshow and Freakside. In 2005 he received the Boost Breakthrough Performer of the Year Award by Surfer magazine.

At the beginning of the video Jamie shows the the place where they should perform and start to scream “oh my God, oh my God!” and the reason is quite easy to understand.
There is no sand on the coast that is completely jagged and there are a lot of rocks that appear from water’s surface. After that Jamie gets ready with his surfboard and as soon as a good wave comes he jumps from a cliff putting the surfboard under his feet and the adventure begins. He surfs very near to the cliffs but it seems not to bother him. The “surfable” area is small and Jamie bumps into his surfmate very often, but it doesn’t seem a problem at all. Jamie keeps surfing, jumping from the cliffs and filming his performance with a camera apparently fixed on his mouth. He also manages to avoid rocks and jump them while surfing and that’s very impressive.
