Diving the wreck of the Lady Kinnaird which sunk on January 20th, 1880.
This 650 tonne 3 masted Iron Barque, loaded with wheat, was making way for England from Port Pirie when it foundered of Cape Burr, Port Neil, only some 700 metres from shore. She soon broke up in the storm. No lives were lost to this wreck, with the crew being saved by the steam tug Yalata.
Port Neil has a raised anchor from the Lady Kinnaird, mounted near the Port Neil Jetty. The other Bow Anchor remains at the wreck-site and can be seen in the video towards the end.
The majority of the wreck is grown over, and melded in with the undulating sea floor –
consisting of valley’s and rocks – It is a beautiful dive, and home to much marine life.
A beautiful dive, but please note, this is a known snapper ground, and caution should be given to diving this site – with some big fish known to pass through the area.
