Diving the Lighter of the Sorata

It is believed that this lighter (Barge) was tendering to the stranding of the Sorata approximately 2 kilometres South of the South Australian coastal town, Cape Jervis.

The Sorata, a steel hulled steam-ship of some 4000 + Tons ran aground on September 3, 1880. The determination of the captain saw through the re-floating which took some weeks.

Cargo was lifted from the Sorata to lighten the load, and whilst reports suggest all cargo was recovered – it is believed that this lighter, with cargo, sunk in bad weather.

Further documented research is required to categorically confirm.
