ELENI K. A converted Liberty Ship Which foundered in 1966 In the shipping Channel Out of Thevenard, South Australia.
The Ship was re-floated and moved to the North West Coast of Goat Island where it finally came to rest.
The former Liberty Ship the ‘JOHNS HOPKINS’, was built for the American War Shipping Administration out of Baltimore, Marylands, USA. The Hull Number forth this ship was 0947. She was surveyed for 550 troops, and assigned to the Army Transport Service.
She was later sold a number of times, and also was renamed a few times. The later name, Eleni K derives from the Greek freight company Eleni.
The wreck lies in approximately 13 metres of water, and generally with very poor visibility (2-3 metres) due to the silty sand that engulfs the area.
The wreck is quite broken up, and collapsed, though some sections of the wreck sit less than 1.5 metres below the surface.
There are swim-throughs though caution needs to be maintained due to potential collapses and surge that will suck you in or push you out. There are also a lot of razor sharp rusted edges. Poor visibility and the sheer size of the wreck
does make it difficult to orientate your way around.
Over 2700 Liberty Ships were built – and taking some 24 days from laying the keel to launch. These ships were approximately 130 metres, 17 metres wide at 14,000 tonnes.
A site well worth visiting.
Thanks for watching.

Nice footage. Not bad water clarity for there either.
Viz is about 2m for most of the dives. Last dive opened up to about 3-4 metres. It is deceivingly clearer than the actual because of wide angle and some post clean-up. Thanks.
