This might be your idea of a nightmare but it’s my idea of a blissful underwater encounter! But it was VERY challenging for me to film this spider crab crawling all over me!

I DEFINITELY got more than I bargained for when I went out on 15 June to visit hundreds of thousands of spider crabs in Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne Australia! This HUGE freshly moulted spider crab either needed a hug – or decided that I did!

It is more likely that this crab in its soft shell was feeling vulnerable and trying to avoid the many predators that would love to feast on it including octopuses, cuttlefish, stingrays, cormorants and other spider crabs! So it was probably climbing me for some safety off the sand. Or maybe it was just thanking me for still diving despite my terminal cancer prognosis and dedicating my life to showing others how amazing the ocean is through some of my underwater photography and videography.
