South Australian Wreck – Glenelg Dredge

Sunk as an artificial reef – reportedly in 1985, The South Australian (commonly referred to as the Glenelg Dredge or simply the Dredge) was a Sand Suction Dredge which arrived in Adelaide, Australia in 1912, it was built in Holland in 1911.

It is possibly the most dived of local wrecks with easy access from local Adelaide boat-ramps and marina’s. It lies some 6.5 km of the coast of Glenelg and sits in some 20-21m of water with the deck at 14-15m.

It is popular with Open Water Divers, and is commonly used as a training ground for Advanced Open Water and Wreck Speciality courses.

Dive Charters, Dive Clubs and Private boat divers easily share this site, along with Anglers who often are in the vicinity of the South Australian and a hopper barge in close proximity, lying some 120 metres from the South Australian.

The Bow faces South, with Star Droppers running from just off the bow to the Glenelg Barge (Hopper Barge).

I hope you enjoy the video.

This video gives a good overview of above and below deck.

I hope you enjoy the footage.

Safe Diving.

Thanks. It was an amazing day on this dive. Rarely does the visibility get as good or better.
