Wreck of the Clan Ranald , Yorke Peninsula, South Australia

SS Clan Ranald was a two decked, turret deck ship, that sank off the rocky coast near Edithburgh, South Australia. It is the only turret ship to have been lost in Australian waters, and therefore represents a unique part of Australia’s maritime history. The bulk of crew were Asian sailors, known as Lascars.

At approximately 109 Metres Long and some 3500t, she is now quite broken up/collapsed.

She lies in 20-22m of water not far from Troubridge Head, near Edithburgh on Yorke Peninsula.

The ill-treatment of the surviving Lascar sailors by the government of the time caused an uproar by many locals and wider community, and contributed to the formation of early immigration policies.

Some 40 lives were lost to the tragedy.

A lovely dive site with some consideration to be given to tidal movements.

Other fantastic dives in the area also extend to:

The wreck of the Prawn Fishing Boat Yatala Reef;

The Fenceline, heading back towards Edithburgh from the Clan Ranald; and

Edithburgh Jetty

to mention a few.

I hope you enjoy the video footage.
